The Fighter

We got free tickets to a preview of The Fighter which is out on the 4th Feb I believe. It stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale as brothers who are both boxers with varying degrees of success. During the first ten minutes I thought Christian Bale would drive me mad with his fast talking character but I soon got used to it. Very well played by all involved including Amy Adams as Micky's (Wahlberg) girlfriend. As someone who really doesn't like boxing I was still able to enjoy the film and hope it picks up some more awards at the upcoming SAG, Baftas and Oscars.

Morning Glory

Morning Glory stars Harrison Ford as a formerly great news man, Mike, who is now killing time on the TV station where he is still under contract. He meets Becky (played by the lovely Rachel McAdams), a TV producer who wants him for her morning show. Diane Keaton plays Colleen who is the other presenter on the show who does not hit it off with Mike. It was quite funny in places but not one I'd watch over and over, even for the lovely Patrick Wilson as the love interest!! It's had really good reviews and I agree that the great cast do a good job it's just not the most original film out there.

Conviction

Conviction stars Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell a brother and sister who had a tough upbringing and are very close. He gets wrongly convicted of murder and she (a high school drop out and mother of two) puts herself through law school so she can defend him. It's based on a true story and was very good.

The Green Hornet 3D

Not a huge amount to say about The Green Hornet. It stars Seth Rogen looking much slimmer than usual in the title role and the film does what you'd expect albeit slightly more of it than you'd expect given it's almost two hour running time. There is a great turn as usual by Christoph Waltz as the bad guy and the film is generally quite good fun, if a little silly at times.
Oh, and I'm over the 3D thing now! My plan is to only see 2D films unless the 3D is supposed to be stunning or there is no choice like with this film. I'll spend my £1.50 supplement per film on ice cream instead!

The King's Speech

I've just come back from seeing The King's Speech which was the best film I've seen for ages! It stars Colin Firth as Bertie (aka King George VI), Geoffrey Rush as his speech therapist and Helena Bonham-Carter as Elizabeth (as we knew her, The Queen Mother). Bertie stammers and has sought help from many doctors when he meets Lionel (Rush) whose methods are unconventional to say the least. What follows is a touching and often funny account of the life of Bertie during the time before his father, the king, passed away up until he makes his first wartime speech as king after his brother, Edward, abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. A wonderful film which thoroughly deserves the good reviews it's getting!

Burlesque

Burlesque stars Christina Aguilera as a small town gal who moves to LA to make her mark as a singer and dancer. She ends up working in a club called Burlesque, first as a waitress and later as a dancer and singer. Cher is the club owner who gets to sing a couple of numbers - one inserted very clumsily into the script! The love interests are the lovely Eric Dane and Cam Gigandet. There is also the always scene-stealing Stanley Tucci as the costume chap who, not surprisingly, bats for the other team! A great fun film which may have been funnier than intended!

Tron Legacy 3D

I just watched Tron Legacy 3D which I'll admit I didn't fancy when I first saw the trailer. After seeing it several more times though I came round to the idea and am glad I did as it was really good. I can't really remember much about the original but it wasn't really my cup of tea at the time but this really kept my attention. It stars Jeff Bridges as his current self and as his former self using clever computer jiggery-pokery to show him as he was in the original film - all very clever. The fight and racing scenes were a sight to behold and Michael Sheen was a scene stealer, as he often is, as Castor/Zuse. A good fun film!
